Like many successful California inventors and entrepreneurs, David Blachley’s journey began with humble beginnings. His family came to California in the early 1950s seeking opportunity, working on a chicken ranch where room and board were provided in exchange for labor. Those early years instilled the values of hard work, perseverance, and self-reliance that would later define his career.

As a teenager in the 1970s, David left high school to help support his young single mother. Encouraged by her constant advice—“Try… try… work for yourself.”—he began looking for opportunities to build something of his own rather than simply work for others.

In 1976, David accepted a job installing mini-blinds for JCPenney. During evenings and weekends, he loaded a van with samples and began selling directly to homeowners under a simple handwritten sign:

“Factory Installer Goes Direct.”

Homeowners responded immediately. What started as weekend work quickly grew into a thriving direct-to-consumer business. David sold from local Southern California flea markets, measured homes himself, installed the products himself, and gradually built a company based on factory-direct pricing, quality, and exceptional customer service.

Long before “direct-to-consumer” became a recognized business model, David was proving that manufacturers could eliminate unnecessary middlemen and deliver greater value directly to homeowners.

By 1997, that small weekend venture had grown into what became America’s largest vertically integrated direct-to-consumer retailer and fabricator of blinds and shutters.

A Turning Point

Then everything changed.

Following a deeply personal family tragedy involving the strangulation hazard of corded blinds, David made the difficult decision to walk away from the business he had spent decades building. Rather than continue selling a product category he believed still posed unacceptable safety risks, he dedicated himself to a new mission.

For more than twenty years, David has led the development of DuraShutter—a next-generation platform designed to make premium plantation shutters more affordable, easier to manufacture, easier to install, safer, and accessible to everyday homeowners rather than only the luxury market.

The Vision Continues

Today, that mission continues.

It is the culmination of four decades of industry experience, more than twenty years of focused innovation, an expanding intellectual-property portfolio, and a vision to transform one of the world’s oldest premium home-improvement categories into one that millions of families can finally afford.
